Young Singers Contest


The contest is open to young men and women currently attending a high school located with the Rotary District 5320, Orange County and South-East Los Angeles County.

The program is designed to encourage high school students as they develop the art of solo singing. Singers will compete in one of four divisions and at three levels.


The preliminary competition will take place at the local Rotary club level.  Each club is responsible for selecting the candidates it wishes to sponsor.  The semi-final will be held at Long Beach City College, and the twelve selected top performers will compete in the finals at Long Beach City College the next day.

FINAL:      LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE CONCERT HALL, Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 3:00 PM   (RECEPTION FOLLOWING)

FIRST PLACE WINNERS WILL PERFORM AT THE DISTRICT 5320 CONFERENCE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 1, SATURDAY, JUNE 2 OR SUNDAY JUNE 3.

Semi-finalist singers are expected to commit from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday, March 31 for competition and listening to others.  Additionally, finalist singers are expected to commit from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, April 1 for the same.

Rules of the District Competition

CATEGORIES:

CLASSICAL: Opera and art songs; female and male categories

MUSICAL THEATER: Broadway show tunes, operettas, movies; female and male categories

ACCOMPANIST: A solo pianist will accompany all selections.  An accompanist will be provided on the day of semi-final and final competition.  No tapes will be permitted.  Long Beach City College provides excellent accompanists.

SHEET MUSIC: Two copies of all selections must be provided for the adjudication on the day of competition.  All music will be returned immediately following the event.

JUDGES: Preliminary competition is at the discretion of the local Rotary club.  Semi-final competition will be adjudicated by music faculty from Long Beach City College and the local area.  Final competition will be adjudicated by a visiting guest professional.

Each contestant at the semi-final will sing one selection, no more than five (5) minutes long.

Finalists will sing two contrasting selections, totaling no more than ten (10) minutes.

Preparing for the Rotary Club Competition

The preliminary competition will take place at the local Rotary club level. Each club is responsible for selecting the candidates it wishes to nominate. Semi-finalists must be nominated by a Rotary Club in District 5320.

  • Contact local high school principals, music or drama teachers, church youth choir directors or private voice teachers in your area for names of possible candidates AND
  • Schedule a club program/competition with judges from high schools, local voice teachers, church youth directors, youth choir directors or club members
  • Nominate one contestant for each category or more if the quality of the performers warrants more than one nomination within the category. There is no maximum number of contestants that may be entered by any one Rotary club. HOWEVER, a $50 fee must accompany each additional nominee within each category.

Preliminary club competitions must be completed by March 26, 2012.  Competition is very strong.  Be very selective. (It is suggested that each club enter 4 contestants, one in each category.)

Application Procedure for Semi-Final Competition

Each singer should contact a Rotary club in the district to nominate them.  No at large candidates will be permitted.  All contestants should have performed for and must be nominated by a Rotary club.

The Rotary club completes a nomination form (download below) for each contestant it enters into the semi-final competition.  The club sends all nominations to:

DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS:       All nomination forms must be received by March 26, 2012.

Awards

Semi-finalists will receive certificates and a written copy of their adjudication from professional adjudicators.

Finalists will receive the above plus cash awards and medallions, in addition to an opportunity to discuss performance with adjudicator.
