The Rotary Club of Irvine, in conjunction with Irvine Mayor Farrah N. Khan, Team Kids, Sabil USA and Zakat Foundation of America, hosted a Coat and Blanket Drive to collect warm blankets and winter coats, sweaters and scarves for victims of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Turkish Airlines will deliver the clothing collected by the drive, held on Sunday, February 12 from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Lakeview Senior Center (20 Lake Road) in Irvine.
Upon hearing about the drive, Rotary District Governor Dan Ouweleen issued an urgent call to help with the event to each of the 49 clubs in his district, which includes all cities in Orange County and cities in southern Los Angeles, including Long Beach.
“Urgently responding to a crisis, both locally and globally, comes naturally to Rotary,” says Ouweleen. “I’m proud of the 1,800 members in our district who consistently step up to accept urgent calls to action, like raising funds for Ukraine medical equipment and producing 90K face shields during COVID.”
Because of the overwhelming response from the community, we were able fill a Turkish Airways cargo plane bound for Turkey and two shipping containers headed to Syria via cargo ship. Any items that did not fit will be distributed among four local non-profits for local needs.
