Irvine resident, Karen Wen, is the recipient of the prestigious Rotary Global Grant Scholarship for graduate study abroad in mental health. Rotary District 5320, which comprises Orange County and Long Beach, selected Wen for the $40,000 scholarship which will support her studies at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Wen, who was spons

ored for the scholarship by the Rotary Club of Irvine, will pursue a Doctorate of Public Health degree, focusing on mental health.

Previously, Wen has earned a Master’s of Global Mental Health from LSHTM/King’s College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Dartmouth. “Mental health is an under-prioritized and under-funded area, even though one in four people around the world will experience some sort of mental health condition at some point in their lives,” says Wen. “Receiving the global grant will help me achieve my ambition of providing accessible, high quality mental health care for all.”

Rotary District 5320 awards this scholarship annually to help prepare students for careers in one of Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus and to foster international understanding among people of different countries. Rotary’s Areas of Focus are:  Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development, and Protecting the environment. The district seeks applicants, like Wen, who can be outstanding Ambassadors of Goodwill.

Rotary District 5320 encompasses 49 clubs and includes all of Orange County and cities in southern Los Angeles, including Long Beach. The district’s Global Grant Scholarship Committee is open to receiving applications for the 2024-25 academic year. Efforts are underway to promote this generous scholarship opportunity at our local colleges.
