We all should know that The Rotary Foundation commits about a third of their budget on Global Grants, second only to Polio Plus. The short and long term impacts of these grants contribute to Positive Peace progress. Rotary International has long been committed to promoting peace and resolving conflicts worldwide through large-scale, sustainable projects that address humanitarian needs. These grants empower Rotary clubs and districts worldwide to implement initiatives that foster understanding, dialogue, and cooperation especially among communities affected by strife and violence.
Recently I made a whirlwind trip (4 days) to India to partake in a ‘Pathways to Peace event’ (organized by the US-India InterCountry committee) which tracked the famous Dandi March of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the earliest peace marches for India’s freedom in 1930. It was a cathartic experience in many ways but it sealed in my mind the need to bring peace in communities around the world.
Global Grants have supported refugee shelters, education and vocational training. They support economic development and empowerment that brings long term peace and stability. In parts of Africa and in Colombia, global grants have reduced tensions between conflicting groups by providing clean drinking water, arable land and mentorship programs.
Rotary Global Grants play a pivotal role in promoting peace and conflict resolution worldwide. Clubs in our District need to embrace Global Grants not only for the leverage they offer in large scale projects but for the kind of impact they create in promoting Peace. This year our District has already funded almost $700,000 in impactful Global grants but we need more clubs to participate. There are many Global Grant opportunities and you just have to step up to make a commitment.
