Rotary Club of Yorba Linda Lobsterfest event raises $115K for Orange County non-profit organizations

Lobsterfest

The 35th Annual Lobsterfest, the flagship event for the Rotary Club of Yorba Linda, has raised $115K to support several Orange County non-profit organizations. More than 1,000 people attended this year’s event, which was held on May 21 at the Yorba Linda Community Center.

Non-profit organizations benefitting from the event include:

  • For Families of Active Military, a support group for the families of those who are actively serving in the military. The donation supports the group’s annual Thanksgiving dinner and a sponsorship of children in these families for weekend trip to Lake Arrowhead that includes fishing with a new fishing pole, boat rides and camping.
  • Orange County Teen Challenge, Santa Ana facility, which offers a residential program for substance abuse recovery and prevention programs.
  • George Key School, which enables students with special needs to reach their potential. The donation supports projects that enhance the student’s experience at school, as well as a holiday party that includes a lunch and presents.

In addition, funds raised at the event are used for scholarships for local high school students, international projects and to support the following local organizations:

  • Higher Ground Youth & Family Services
  • Love Yorba Linda
  • Make-A-Wish
  • Military Children’s Charity
  • Providence St. Jude Medical Center
  • Rising Above Disabilities
  • SoCal Trykers
  • The Outreach Program
  • YMCA of Orange County
  • Yorba Linda Food for Families

For the event, which was planned by the Rotary Club of Yorba Linda and staffed solely by volunteers from Rotary Club, Teen Challenge and the local community, 4,000 pounds of lobster were flown in from Maine. In addition to the lobster feast, attendees were treated to music and dancing, games, a raffle for a television, and a silent and on-line auction for items including a Pedego Electric Bike and trips — most of which have been donated by local businesses.

The Rotary Club also sponsored 40 U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton to attend the event as VIPs. These active military members were provided with a bus ride to and from the event, lobster, steak and drinks.

Rotary Club donations and service projects fall into Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus, which are:  Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development, and Protecting the environment.
